The archaeological remains found in the region, such as presses, vats excavated in rocks and vessels of Roman origin, evidence their participation in the introduction of the viticulture in Monterrei.
From the IXth century, an expansion of wine production by religious orders occurs, using it as payment to monasteries and feudal lords. A wine that preserves the tradition through the centuries. At the beginning of the 60s the Bodega Cooperativa de Monterrei was built, with the aim of promoting the correct production of wines and their subsequent commercialization.
At the end of the 20th century, the vineyard almost disappeared in the area, but the administrative recognition of the Denomination of Origin, as well as the commitment to quality wines, led to the resurgence of the region.
